3. Finding topics and terms – using the ONLINE EDITION

3.1 Chapter contents

Each chapter has a Table of Contents for the chapter set out down the left side of the screen. This feature should make it possible to quickly see the contents of each chapter and to locate almost any issue in its context by simply scrolling through the headings of each section in the chapter as set out on the left side of the screen.

Each section and sub-section within each chapter is numbered allowing simple cross-reference to other relevant sections and sub-sections throughout the ONLINE EDITION. This feature is used extensively so that anything else that may be relevant to a particular issue can be quickly and easily checked.

3.2 Cross-referencing

A consistent method of cross-referencing is used throughout the ONLINE EDITION:

• where the cross-reference is to a specific sub-section within the same chapter, the simple number of that sub-section is used; for example (see 3.2) or (6.2) which is easily located by scrolling through the sections for the chapter on the left side of the screen;
• where the cross-reference is to a whole section within the same chapter, the cross-reference is to “section 5” or “section 9” also located by using the left side navigation;
• where the cross-reference is to a section or sub-section in another chapter, this is made clear; for example “see Chapter 14, section 9” or “(see Chapter 36, 8.3)”;
• cross-references to other chapters are also hyper-linked, so a simply click takes you to the relevant chapter, the Table of Contents for which is set out on the left side of the screen.

The use of “inverted commas” generally, although not always, means that the term used is a special one with a particular meaning which is used consistently throughout the ONLINE EDITION and which is also defined elsewhere. Generally, the definition is either in that section or there is a cross-reference to it.
