  • Services provided: The Welfare Rights Centre is a community legal centre specialising in Social Security law. The Centre is committed to the proactive provision of information, assistance and advocacy, which changes and enhances the power of people reliant on the Social Security system. The Centre provides free and independent advocacy services to customers of Centrelink. The Centre provides information and advice over the telephone; negotiates with Centrelink on behalf of clients; represents clients at the Social Security Appeals Tribunal and the Administrative Appeals Tribunal. We have an extensive community liaison program; publish papers on Social Security matters to raise issues of concern; and work with other members the National Welfare Rights Network in lobbying for law reform at a national level.

  • Geographical area covered by the Centre: South Australia and Broken Hill

  • Contact times/days for clients:

    • Monday to Friday 1.30 to 5.00pm.

    • Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 9 to 12.30 and 1.30 to 5.00

    • Friday 9.00 to 12.30

  • Appointment required or can clients drop in? Prefer people to telephone first

  • Outreach clinic: Port Adelaide, alternate Thursday mornings. Appointments can be made by phoning 8226 4123 during contact times listed above.

  • Housing legal clinics: offer pro bono legal assistance to homeless people and those at risk of homelessness. These are at the following locations:

    • Hutt Street (Mondays 10 – 12)

    • Catherine House (Tuesdays 10 – 12)

    • Magdalene Centre (Tuesday 10 – 12)

    • Byron Place Community Centre (Wednesday 10 – 12)

    • Port Adelaide (Thursday 5 – 7)
